840 NVRAM won't update, any ideas?

I have a phaser 840. I cannot change the nvram settings. That is to say, I can get in the menu and change them but when I reset the printer the old settings return.
Xerox tech support says to send it in for new electronics at great expense.
Has anyone dealt with this problem and solved it or have any less expensive solutions?
