The 8203-E4A microcode level is EL340_061.

Everytime AIX (5.3 TL9SP1) is rebooted (or LPAR is activated norlally from HMC) it enters SMS menu (of course in the SMS I can select to boot from a SAS drive and it boots ok)

1) Setting boot list in SMS doesn't solve the problem.

2) bootlist in AIX is set properly and shows:

# bootlist -m normal -o
hdisk0 blv=hd5
hdisk1 blv=hd5

# lspv -p hdisk0|grep hd5
1-1 used outer edge hd5 boot N/A

# lspv -p hdisk1|grep hd5
1-1 used outer edge hd5 boot N/A

3) "bosboot -a" always completed ok.

4) hd5 lv recreation and successfull "bosboot -a -l hd5" doesn't solve the problem.

# rmlv hd5
# chpv -c hdisk0
# chpv -c hdisk1
# mklv -t boot -y hd5 -ae -c 2 rootvg 1 hdisk0 hdisk1
# bosboot -a -l hd5

5) no attention led is displayed on the managed server in the HMC

6) another, the same type system with the same microcode level is not affected with that problem (installed from the same system mksysb image)

any idea?

thx in advance,
rm.

I fixed the problem removing LPAR and rewriting its configuration (exactly the same) from scratch. Now the system reboots as should.

for future reference, i think if i can recall, last time i saw this, i had to go into the activation -> advanced screen in the hmc for that lpar under operations and set its boot mode back to normal as it was set to SMS.

hmm,,, I am pretty sure I had set NORMAL and not SMS when the problem existed.

Make sure boot mode is normal and service boot or whatever it's called, is disabled in the profile.
