81C Upgrade Question

I will be upgrade the company 1000M cp4 with succession 3.0 to a 1000M PIV with fiber, and succession 4.5 next weekend. Any tips?

pay attention to the part numbers.. not close but exact, check all the rls's of cards in service.. make sure they are usable for 4.5.. i haven't heard of any horror stories like some of the upgrades we've done

I was going to upgrade to fiber first on the current release and then bring switch back into service and test to make sure that works. then take switch back down to to the core swap out and software upgrade. What do you think?

You should schedule 6 to 10 hours to do this. The proper way to do this will be to do one core at a time card cage, clock controllers, and FIji. Make sure everythging is working on that core, switch, do the second core then join. (downtime will depend if your system is AC or DC) Good Luck

Tippman is correct-
If you have any dual pri boards, some vintages AE and AF are not compatible with FNF.

Also, print out your EPT if you have one, I have seen this not survive an upgrade to 4.5 on occasion.

Also double check that you have the correct ISM licenses for the upgrade. You may have added new sets after an order pro was done on your system. Double check the ISM parameters on the one for the new software.

Check new ISMs before

Check your Core Module Power supplies. The ones with the old cp4 processors don't work with the new Pentium processors. You will need new ones. (biggest pitfall)

Note your current IP scheme in the switch. This does not always convert over.

FNF upgrade should take about 4 hours, mostly pulling cables out. I use spiral wrap with the fiber connections, especially if there are a lot of cables in your switch. Just added protection.

Card Cage upgrade - my personal records
3.25 hours with another person
6 hours by myself.

Don't forget some good electrical tape to keep the filter grid in place, That is a pain.

Helpful tips.

Screw in your power harness, on the back of the card cage, BEFORE you tighten down the card cage to the module. Being able to slide the card cage forward really helps.

And again, good tape to secure the grid. If this moves when you are sliding in your card cage, it becomes a hassle.
