Does anyone know of a way to get around the 8 character user name limit in AIX? With nearly 8000 users it is getting difficult to come up with different variations of peoples names. Says the Manager to the person that invented the modem: "Tell me again why you need two prototypes?!?"

slgordon,

As far as I am aware the 8 character limit is a hard limit and as such cannot be increased. I have had a quick look at IBM web site and this seems to confirm my suspicions......I have also tried frigging the system i.e.: setting up user 11111111 - then editing /etc/passwd and /etc/group and /etc/security/user and changing the user name to nine 1's- although it appears in the list of users you cannot set a password or login as the user - i.e. user does not exist.

I would suggest you log a call with IBM and ask for code changes to extend the length of user name field.

bummer....
thanks anyway Says the Manager to the person that invented the modem: "Tell me again why you need two prototypes?!?"

Same problem here, busy migrating users from SCO to AIX, quite a few users have usernames longer than 8 characters, presents a problem to me since a lot of these users are dial-up UUCP customers and would not even know how to change the username etc. in the uupc config files.
