Oddly enough, it started caring about characters in excess of eight a few versions earlier than it would allow them.
Somewhere in the middle of 4.2-4.3 land a few of our users found out that their usernames weren't what they thought.
They'd been typing in their full nine or ten character names and the older version ignored the extra characters. The newer version didn't ignore them, even though usernames were still limited to eight characters, so the longer names became invalid (which they technically were all along).
