8.3 system file name problem

Hi,

We have installed Server 2003 on a site with no problems until today. One user has tried to create a new Word document and save it to a folder on the server, and is getting this message,

"Cannon save file, 'test document.doc' is not a valid 8.3 system file name. Type a valid file name such as filename.xxx, and save the file again."

If the filename is changed to 'testdoc.doc', it will save no problem.

This user is running Windows 98SE, as are the other 5 users on the network, but they are having no problems. Existing documents on the server can be edited and saved with no problem and they have filenames over 8 characters long.

I have since tried to create any file, or even copy a file from the hard disk to the server, but if the name is over 8 characters long I get an error.

It seems that this user is unable to create files over 8 characers long, whereas the other users can. The 6 users were set up exactly the same and have the same permissions.

I was wondering if we have missed a setting on the server, or if anyone knows how to resolve this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you solve this problem as I have exactly the same problem. Some w98 clients get errors, others don't.

Hi,

We did solve it and it was due to the way the user logged on. They had one password to log on to the network, and one to log on to Windows 98. We changed the passwords to match and we had no problems. This was the only user set up this way, so no one else was having the problem.

Hope it solves it for you.
