Just upgraded to 8.1. What a disaster. On 8, I didn't have any users linked up to email accounts. Can't install 8.1 without a linked email user. Now that's taken the admin user out. What I used to have is

me, called me using Users/me, my photo - local user
wife, called wife using Users/wife, wife's photo - admin user

What I ended up with is

me, called me using Users/me, my photo - local user
wife, called by my email name using Users/wife, wife's photo - admin user

I used lusrmgr.msc to rename the wife and create a new wife so now I have

me, called me using Users/me, my photo - local user
wife, called wife using Users/wife.computername, wife's photo - admin user
email name, called email name, using Users/wife, random photo - admin user

The other annoying thing is that the border padding has gone huge again. Why does windows insist we have large border padding and why have they removed the option to change the padding. Up to W7, you could change it from desktop settings. Now I have to go into the registry to change it.

Um - yes you can. I certainly did. Been while now since I did it, so unfortunately can't remember the slightly baroque process necessary.

I managed to do it on 8.0 but on the 8.1 upgrade, I couldn't get to the next screen. Anyway, it is water under the bridge: it is installed and working. Directories aren't as I would like them but since I hardly ever use the admin account, it doesn't really matter.

I've taken off admin access from the email user.

The other really annoying thing about W8 is when I want to move a window to the right so I can see 3 other windows it is obscuring, it somehow decides to go full screen. I'm a great believer in software should do what it has been told to do. I just absolutely hate intelligent software. It is just hard work fighting intelligence. Sometimes it is so nice to go back to XP and some of the Linux Window managers which do exactly what I want instead of trying to be intelligent and getting me extremely annoyed.

Try this in Windows 8:

1- Go to control panel and click on Ease of Access Center.
2 - Once in that panel select the option "Make the mouse easier to use".
3 - Once opened, tick the box saying "Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen" and then click Apply and OK.
4 If you want to enable it later just deselect that box and it will be enabled again.

Oh oh oh - that's new. I thought Ease of Access was those things like magnifiers and on-screen keyboards. Thanks linney.
