What is it that makes the difference in an IP address (XP)whether you input .77 or .077. Setting up a printer today with a Standard TCP/IP address, the admin gave me 192.168.1.77 and I input .077 and it dindnt work. When I tried to PING the 077 the reply was for a different number like .63 I think.
So know I know but why?

Sometimes .077 wil be interpeted as an Octal Number where .77 would be in the Decimal we all know and love

(70 octal would be 7*8 or 56 so 77 would be 63)

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Thanks. What OS's use this system?

Interesting point - didn't know that

I never put any unnceccary 0s in front of numbers in IP addresses so I have never noticed this!

I presume all the Windows family will work like that, although that is simply a guess.
