740 uses color toner to emulate black

... even though we have plenty of black toner. Or that's what it seems like. The result is blacks that have a magenta tinge to them, and are a little fuzzy with slight color halos around the black. And we assume it is using up toner that it doesn't need to. When we switch Print Mode to black & white, everything looks great. But in color, black is not exactly black.
 
Late answer, but might help someone else.

The fast color setting uses only the three process colors, and is 25% faster becauses it does not use black. To get true blacks, you must choose, Standard, Presentation, or Premium (if printer has upgrade kit).
