740 newbie, fan, hard drive questions

I just picked up a 740 for 25.00 from goodwill, and thanks to this forum, fixed the error 33, jam at A. Works great! I was wondering about the fans though. Even in energy star mode, they are on all the time. Can I set them to turn off, or wire them up differently? (like change where they get power from to something that only comes on when your printing) Second, what would the hard drive be used for? What kind of hard drive can I use? How does it hook up?

Another question, it keeps telling me magenta is low, but it is calculating at 100% coverage for magenta! How can I reset this to match the other colors usage, which I think is like 5%?
