Hey all, I have a HP 712c deskjet that will not work with XP Home. The only way it will detect the printer is if I go to device manager> ports> lpt1> port settings> Enable legacy plug and play. THEN it will find the printer just fine. BUT after I restart/shut down the computer it doesn't work, and I have to go through those steps again! Help!

Have you contacted HP to see if there are up-dated drivers for XP? What was it hooked up to before, and did it work OK?

HP is NO help. They tell it is out of service and to buy a new one. No drivers for XP at all. Have tried other drivers for fun... 2000/ME. Worked before XP upgrade.

Updated drivers can be a problem. I recently had a client have to buy a new printer (a two year old Canon Multipass for which there were no XP drivers).

Some questions: Is the printer connected to the parallel port or to a USB port using an adapter cable? What is the parallel port mode set in the BIOS? Have you tried related XP drivers (like the 710C or 720C or 722C)?

I had problems early on with my 722C and a parallel port scanner and just bought a cable adapter to run it through a USB port and recognition and addition of the printer was easily accomplished then. XP has its own (crippled) drivers for this printer and they work quite well even if all functions aren't supported.

Sloth is the mother of invention. Necessity is just a mother...
