the documentation is kinda vague on this.

What kind of signal do you get out of the "bell" jack on the back/bottom of the 7100 set? is it an audible tone or a 90 v ring? Wondering this because will need loud audibles rings.

strangly enough I don't have one on hand to play with right now.

The documentation would seem to indicate the ringing signal is an audiable like other Norstar phones. However I did try the one 7100 set I have and could not get anything off the bell port at all. I did not have much time to play, but tried turning headset to auto, aux. ringer to Y and both pairs on the port but still nothing.

Now I am curious as well. I will play with it later on the weekend.

This phone requires a self amplified bell.

JerryReeve,

Since the 7100 can't go hands free therefore it can't use a headset so the only thing left for it is the external ringer.. which is why Nortel put the bell icon on the jack.
Using the port requres a closure activated ring generator such as a Bogen NR100 or better an Algo Duette II Plus. The NR100 will require an amplified paging system to sound, the Duette will both generate ring and amplify (and connect to another amplified paging system).
If using the Duette II as a stand alone ringer/amplifier, be sure not to exceed about 25-50 wire feet or the thing won't work.

ARR,

What I'm getting from you is that on the T/R of pair 1 ofthe rj-11 there is a relay closure? or a loop closure like a telephone set uses. I knew it wasen't a headset jack but wasen't sure what the actual connection was made by (relay, loop or audible).

JerryReeve,
The 7100 puts out an audio level ringing sound. The Duet Plus is set to 'detect' mode and will warble/chirp when that threshold is met.
Despite my earlier ramblings (sorry) the NR100 won't work. But you can spin other amplified systems off the Duet Plus as it rings while attached to the 7100.
All Norstar phones work in this manner.
