I'm working on an 8x10 enlargement that is from the early 70's. It has the usual faded color and a tear on one side which can be fixed with a littile work but I'm haveing a tough time with the grain of the picture.

There seems to be a lot of red that is clearly seen in the scan and the main person, a child, is wearing a vibrant orange which is throwing off all adjustments I make.

The child is the only thing in the picture save for the street behind him and a few dead leaves so there is nothing to worry about messing up except for the boy.

Any thoughts on how to approach this restoration?

Why can't you cut and paste the child to another layer, or at least the child's orange clothing?

There is a lot of grain in the child too so I have to treat each peice as different. The hair is that sun bleached blond that kids get and that causes further complications.

I understand, I had the same problem and it was frustrating.

I did carefully cut some clothing and relocated the pieces to different layers. It was tedious but it made much easier to get the red out, adjust the curves, etc. without effecting the areas I didn't want to touch.

I also had to cut and paste some very dark features to new layers and deal with them seperately.

Lots of work but the end product was very good.
