From where I am, 70-299 seemed like a good idea at the time. This, plus the exams that I'm already planning for, will give me MCSE+Security after 4 more exams.

I had some trouble installing the Readiness Review that came with the 70-299 book from MS Press, so against my own advice I used the Test King material. The exam was 35 questions, and the Test King had 31. As I said, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The Test King really let me down, as none of the questions there were on the exam. I ended up with a score of 552 and a feeling that I really should have studied better.

Besides the Readiness Review, can anyone recommend some better study software for 70-299?

i have always found the sybex press books to be resonably complete.

pre-testing software: selftest software -
having used both transcender and selftest, imo, you can LEARN more using the selftest.

testking = answers from old tests, not concepts. selftest will teach the CONCEPTS, and then it is possible to derive answers to new questions that may appear...

buddafish,

Thanks for your advice. I'm familiar with the Sybex book, and I've already read the MS Press book. There's not much more out there on this subject.

Selftest software didn't seem to have anything at all, so it's back to the drawing board for me, so to speak.

i guess i jumped the gun. neither trancender or self test has pre-exam for this. my bad...

after reviewing the prep guide for this exam, i would think that stepping thru each skill and doing it (as many as possible) would be great learning. in my experience applying security to a network (and keeping everything working) is much more challenging than many would think.

the comp-tia sec + exam was pretty easy for me, but this exam looks very challenging. from the feedback i got about the ISA exam (70-227), i would take the 70-299.

i think i may take a shot at this exam and upgrade my certs..

best of luck

buddafish,

Selftest software and Transcender don't have anything currently available on 70-299, Test King was a waste, but I have managed to acquire the CBT Nuggets videos for 70-299.

Any opinion about CBT Nuggets in general?

CBT Nuggets are great, they are a good thing to use if you need to brush up in a particular area. In general I prefer them to Learnkey but I do rate the Learnkey material as well.

I am going to be taking the class for 299 in two weeks time, I decided to go down the route of Sec+ rather than ISA as Sec+ is more beneficial to me anyway.

Transcender have released new testing software now, using a single engine and just exam modules loaded on top. It may be worthwhile investigating the new technologies.

It's also my understanding that it's either SY0-101 or 70-227 and 70-299 rather than 70-227 or 70-299. I could be wrong tho.

Have you resat the exam yet? How is your prep going and how did you find the Nugget?

oh btw 'acquire' <cough>p2p</cough>???

SimonDavies,

My apologies for not updating this thread. I did retake the exam, and passed it in February. I don't have my score report handy, but a pass is a pass anyway.

The CBT Nuggets videos, in this case anyway, were very beneficial, as the animation of how to complete certain tasks was easier to remember than the flat illustrations in the MS Press book.

As far as how it was acquired, all that I can say is that I borrowed it from a friend and gave it back. How it was orignally acquired, I don't really know.
