Hi all
I have just joined this forum and i have also just completed my.
mcp 70-290
mcp 70-270
Comptia Security+

I have been studying for 70-291, i have done 2 of the transenders but need to work a bit harder on DNS also ip addressing. Is there anywhere i can get some plain speaking info on the subject of ip addressing and sub net masks binary maths wasn't really my thing at school, well maths in general wasn't .
Forum looks good and plenty of good topics. Thanks again.

Even if you can't get to grips with some of it I wouldn't worry too much, very few questions require subnetting understanding IMO. I think I only had 1 question (in all 7 exams) and that was basically a client couldn't talk to a remote server - it was obvious there was a misconfigured subnet on the gateway (and I mean like a class B vs class C mismatch not a true subnetted one).

Actually, I had a subnetting question on the 70-291 both times I took it. Ironically, it was the shortest question I've seen on a Microsoft exam, and somewhat surprised me. The question was pretty similar to:

You have a host with an IP address of 10.1.1.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.248.0.
What is the broadcast address for this subnet?

Subnetting is good to know, and will come in handy. I only had one question that was so straight forward on any of the Microsoft exams however.

I had a couple of subnetting questions.

My advise is to be able to do the convertions on Windows Calc. You have the Windows Calc available to you when you are taking the tests.

Sure, but you need some subnetting skills in case there are any subnetting questions.

This data is just to illustrate:
Host IP: 10.1.1.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.248.0
Broadcast address: 10.1.7.255
Network address: 10.1.0.0

This is true, calc can help with that as well though. And calc is easier than using scratch paper.

mrdenny,

Absolutely, a calculator is faster and easier than scratch paper.
Doing it in your head is faster still.

:)

something i learn for every exam, end up only half remembering, then not having a question on it...

or a question so obvious....

but not being too clever, got 293 to do still -even if easy apparently... when we know our stuff its bound to be easy :)
