I'm planning on taking my 70-290 exam next week and was just after any advice for final preparation.

I've completed the relevant microsoft training courses for all the MCSE exams which was very useful as we don't have an AD environment were I work yet.

Looking through the exam info it seems terminal services will be brought up. I have never really used this so will be experiementing and reading up on it this week. Any pointers as to what sort of things I should try / read about terminal services.

I'm pretty good on backup procedures as that's one of my functions here but we don't use windows backup. Any particular things I should read up on that are more specific to the Microsoft tool?

Any other pointers?

All advice, much appreciated.

Cheers,

Steve G (MCP)

Keep in mind that Microsoft likes to test on all the new features of the product involved.

nevets2001uk,

It's literally been over two years since I took this exam, but when I took 70-290, 20% of the exam was Terminal Services, which (at the time) was only covered in an appendix in the back of the MS Press book. I did not pass on the first attempt.

The Readiness Review CD which is included with the MS Press book is a good resource for preparing for the exam. The questions are not exactly the ones you're likely to see on the exam, but the subject matter is.

Thanks guys.

Sorry for not getting back sooner but I've been on a mad revision cram for the last couple of weeks and forgot my post here!!

I spent a lot of time prepping for this exam and was pleasently surprised to pass with a 910 score.

It all seemed quite reasonable except for a few stupid questions and the time limit was plenty to complete it in.

I took the 70-270 yesturday (I know... reverse order!!) and passed that although there was a problem with printing the results and I've yet to have it confirmed. On screen it said I scored 873.

I'm on to studying for the 70-291 now.

congrats, nothing wrong with doing it in reverse order, good luck with 70-291, apparently the hardest of them all, not that i'm there yet!

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

Hi nevets2001uk
Was it your first time to take the test when u scored 910? .. I just took the test today and I failed badly.. I've studied really hard and went over all the cover materials but when I was in the exam room and reading some some questions, I have no idea what they're talking about. For example, they have a simulation that you have to drag and drop 4 confirgures like "ou.ie=disable" I dont see that kind of questions in the books nor the online training center... How did you study for yours? Did you study based on the books as well? If you know any better ways to prep for this exam please do tell..

Hi Itek2006

Yes it was my first attempt at the exam, although I had done two other Microsoft exams 2 years prior which gave me an idea of the style to expect.

One of the hard things about the MS exams is trying to understand the questions. They're not always very clear and the wording is designed to trick you a bit.

Try to read the question and then rule out the unlikely answers. Usually you can get rid of two options by doing this. Then concentrate on what they're asking and the answer that fits that request.

I used the MOC course book and did a bit of training. I used Technet to flesh out my knowledge and used Virtual PC to configure a server and try things out until I was clear how things worked. The MS help was quite useful as well.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your retake.

Cheers,
Steve

This is excellent advice for the multiple choice questions that want only one choice answers.

In my experience, if there are 4 possible answers, two of them are so wrong as to be laughable. The other two are usually very similar, and often the difference is only a word or two. If you know the material well enough, selecting the correct choice out of only 2 possibilities is easy.

The point-and-click, multiple check box questions, and simulations are a different matter entirely, but for the choose one multiple choice questions, this has always been the way I do them.

YMMV, of course, but it's always worked for me.

I just used that method for some of the questions on the two beta exams for Shaepoint portal 2007 and sharepoint services 3.0. Here's keeping my fingers crossed for the next 6-8 weeks.
