In preparation fro 70-270 I was going through a batch of questions and answers.

One of them said something to the effect, you are going to install a batch of XP computers. All computers have the same HAL, but different disk controllers.

Then you are given a choice of RIS or SYSPREP. The correct answer was RIS. I would think since RIS is an image, that something as fundemental as different disk controllers would cause a problems?

Since no one has replied to this ill take a stab at it.

Sysprep is simply a tool that prepares a existing widows XP install for imaging by adding a system service for creating an unique local domain SID after install of the master image. There are also Two requirements for sysprep

The HAL of the computers must be identical

The hard drive controller device must be identical

RIS on the other hand can copy the i386 folder and can install a fresh copy of XP as if you were sitting on front of the computer with a the disc in the drive. Installing XP this way would force each manchine to recognize the different disk controllers and any other hardware indifferences during the XP setup. Combine this with an answer file and you will be up and running in no time.;-)

Hope this helps

RIS is actually Remote Installation Service. There is an image per se, but it's the Windows XP CD image. The domain controller actually controls what is installed and how it gets installed. By using this service in conjunction with an answer file and UDF list you can completely automate the installation of an entire network of systems.
