Hi all.

I have read a few messages concerning both 70-270 and MCDST. Which do you you recommend?

I am looking at getting on the MCP track. I have enrolled on a part-time nightly 70-210 college course starting in September with the exam in December. But before the 70-210 exam I would like to self-study for a 270 or a MCDST. Once I have achieved I will leave my present place of work and then continue my MCP track at a more 'professional' company (don't ask).

So which do you I recommend I go for? I would really like an MCDST certification to take to interviews, but in the future I would like to move towards gaining an MCSA in 2000/2003.

I would appreciate any replies to help my decision.

Regards

CRML,

If your goal is to gain MCSA or certification, you'll need to take 70-270 at some point. Whether you do that first or MCDST first is up to you.

If you're headed towards an MCSE 2000, 70-210 ***OR*** 70-270 will help; but having both is a waste of time, effort, and money...

OTOH, the MCDST is a Microsoft version of the A+, not yet widely recognized...

Sincer the 70-210 test will require you to posess knowledge about "server stuff", why not study a bit about 70-215 as well...

Be sure to concentrate your studies and your $$$ on one goal at a time unless you want to fail...

Sorry. I know how to spell "Since" and "Possess"... just a little dyslexia creeping into my dotage...

Funny, but I didn't catch the typo in my last post until just now. "MCSA or certification" should read "MCSA certification". I was also assuming that this was MCSA 2003, which jtb points out is not necessarily the case.

jtb also makes an excellent point about focussing on one goal at a time. Unless CRML plans to take the exam for 70-270 before starting the 70-210 course, it's best to concentrate on one exam at a time.

The information that I have from Microsoft Press indicates that either 70-210 or 70-270 will satisfy the Client OS portion of the MCSA 2003 requirement. I don't know that this is true also in the MCSA 2000 track, but if it is, then taking both 70-210 and 70-270 does not get CRML closer to his MCSA goal.

Thanks for the replies.

Because I want to 'get my foor in the door' I would still like to gain the MCDST is possible by the end of the year. This will allow me to leave my current job (I look after 35 PC's, 5 of which are still running Windows 3.11, thats how much investment they put into the IT department!) and start applying for new jobs.

I have over 6 years experience in PC Support but no qualifications to prove it to a new employer which is why I want to gain a couple of MCP's to prove my williness to further my IT career.

Once I get the new job then I can start my MCSA 2003 track with possibly the finance of a new employer beind me. My current employers would faint even if I were to ask them for the £100 exam fee for the 271 or 272!
