690 CXI "Incompatible Color Print Cartridge"?

My 690cxi has been a friend for years, but out of the blue yesterday I received this "Incompatible Color Print Cartridge" message. The cartridge is probably at least 75% full. Has anyone else had this problem? I know it is the correct cartridge, (78) I've been using it for a couple months. I'm leary of spending the $50 for a new one. In case it's a bigger issure. Any ideas?

Try gently cleaning the contacts on the cartridge.

Thanks, I just tried that and it didn't work. I'll try a more aggressive approach. Also I mistated the model number, it's not a 690, it's a 970cxi. Thanks for the suggestion.
