6509/2948G VTP not transfering VLAN info

6509/2948G VTP
(2) dot1q trunks in a channel, both trunk fine but VTP mode on 2948 changes from client to transparent as soon as I connect them and vlans don't transfer. Connection/channel/trunk all OK. Also cannot ping to or from 2948G but it can ping it's own IP.
Any ideas???
