hi, i have a cisco 6509 with dual sup720's in MSF/SSO mode.
On the active sup720 im using one of the gigabit interfaces but i dont have an ethernet plugged into the standby sup720 gigabit port.

I'm assuming i can plug in an ethernet into the standby sup720's gigabit port without any issues. Cisco doesnt make this very clear on their docs, i read that the standby gigabit ports are always active. so my question becomes if i have an ethernet cable plugged into the active and the standby port will this cause any issues.

do the sup720's active/standby ports work together? if so how.

yep, they work together just fine. Shows up as interface gigabit 5/1-2 6/1-2 depending on which slot you are in.

ok i see the interface and it was admin down, interface 6/1. i did a no shut.

now my question becomes can i give it the same ip as the interface 5/1. i want give it the same ip as int5/1 and also plug an ethernet on port 6/1 to the same switch 5/1 is going to.

i want to do this incase the main supervisor goes down and i dont have to manually do anything.

That you won't be able to do. You could try putting both of them in a port-channel, and put the ip on the port-channel interface instead of the physical interfaces.
