61C migration to CS1000E w/ MG XPEC

Just curious about how many of you have upgraded/migrated an Option 61C (or other large system for that matter) to a CS1000E. We're in the middle of such an upgrade, converting eight IPEs to media gateways off a CS1000E run by six CPPMs inside three MG1010 cabinets; two cores, and four application servers (UCM x 2, Element Manager x 2, Signaling Servers x 2 and an NRS - some cards have multiple applications). We attempted the upgrade last night and had a problem with the ways the MG XPECs were built in the switch, MGC instead of MGX. We called off the upgrade to take everything out, modify the programming and put it all back in. We utilized our window of opportunity to get the I/O panels all swapped out and MG XPEC cards configured. Before putting the 61C back in service we fired up an IPE with an MG XPEC card. We had problems registering it to the security server (self induced we later discovered). We called Nortel for support and got three gentlemen on the line. They hadn't neard of an MG XPEC card. In fact they asked if that was what we were referring to it as or if it actually said that on the face plate. It got me to wonder how many people are using them.


If you've done something similar to this upgrade did it all go smoothly? I'll know how ours went in a few hours.

We recently did a similar upgrade (a bit smaller) and for the most part things went smooth...

The biggest problem we had was faxing and modem lines.

Our previous 61c was all TDM. So the first thing missing was we had to add CLS FAXA to all the fax 500 ports, and MPTA to all the modem devices on 500 ports. Alot of things worked before adding these but some did not. That made them work "better" but we still had some issues. (mainly with certain fax transmissions continuing having problems handshaking, and reducing speed all the way down till eventually giving up)

Nortel then told us we had to statically set our devices to 14400 max (ie no "G3" faxing etc) Did that, still had some problems.

Our vendor did work hard on the situation.. Codecs were fine, T.38 faxing was working etc.

The final action that fixed our problem was we moved all of the analog cards to the MG1010 cabinet that also housed the PRI card that they were using. We had to reprogram all of those TNs and re-cross connect them. In other words, NOT USING A MGC. Taking the MGC out of the picture resolved the issue.

The frustrating/strange thing was, about 95% of our faxes were fine before the change. Unfortunately, 5% of the close to 1000 faxes we do a day is still not acceptable.

On a lager scale, this might not be possible for some people. Its actually more of a work around than a fix, but both our vendor and nortel were a bit stumped.

We had a similar fax issue on a CS1KE cutover three weeks ago, all MG cabinets. We had to set MPTD to make them work - super G3. We considered moving fax machines to MGs holding PRIs, but too many PRIs and fax machines to make that a viable solution.

HI, any of you guys got M2216 still working on your Rls 5.5 or Rls 6 systems, upgraded to Rls 6 and now 2216 wont work correctly,still work but when connect a handset or headset get dial tone through speaker and headset ie phone speaker stays off hook also,

We found that there were many issues with the loadware and it's important to have the latest installed. A number of reboots of the MG XPEC's were required in order for the Digital and analogue cards to function OK.

One lesson learned was that It's not really necessary to swap out the backplane IPE connector faceplates as it was found to be easier to extend the IP cables onto the MG XPEC card. Also the serial TTY port didn't need to be routed in the manner that was specified.

Expect to spend a few hours changing out these connections as it's very time consuming and very tricky. Also clear the area and provide suitable cloths to catch any of the small nuts that will fall. Don't forget to get hold of a good torch. You will need it!.

I found that each IPE shelf with 2 plates took a good hour to change out. Don't rush it!.

Before I forget, DNS was a big problem is the customer uses it!. Make sure that the CS1000 details are registered with it as it causes many hours of head scratching!.

The system has now been in service a few days and doing OK. We've had problems with our 2000 series telephones. They just don't work on some shelves so we've had to move approximately 100 to other IPEs. Once we find a suitable home for them they seem to remain stable. The customer was concerned with losing real estate, but their 3900 series sets work everywhere.

We've lost registration on DSPs a couple times. Customer doesn't like the fact they might have to keep a much closer eye on things. Have any of you experienced a problem with this? If you know something that might cause this let me know. We've got the proceedures down for getting things registered with the domain in a few easy steps, but things shouldn't lose registration in the first place.

My thoughts: adding UCM - or put another way forcing the customer to bear the burden of UCM whether they need it or not, is a much worse idea then selling them a 4.5 system with a CS1000E and an MG1000T when all they want is a telephone system. All these new features and cababilities are going to isolate customers that don't have full-time support staff in house. CS1000Es were starting to go in the right direction up until 5.5 but now have taken a turn for the much more complicated worse.
