I have a 5xp connected to a Paradyne ReachDSL modem via a crossover cable and a Netgear switch via a straight through. Whenever I unplug the 5xp or disconnect the untrust cable to the modem and restart/reconnect, I lose the connection to the modem. It still doles out IP addresses and I can ping both the private and public addresses, and the untrust light and the modem's ethernet light are green, but I cannot access external addresses.

The weird thing is that I can solve this problem by switching the ends of the crossover cable; i.e. putting the end that was in the modem into the firewall and vise-versa. Sometimes I need to do this a few times, but it eventually works. I have had this symptom with two different cables.

Has anyone experienced this before and does anyone know what is causing this and whether more severe problems may ensue?

Thanks,

Sam

I can't say that I've seen that before but I have seen some very strange stuff happen that was fixed by changing the firmware. Sometime I would have to downgrade the firmware to an older version to fix some issues. If you can get a different firmware version I'd try it.

I have to agree with the alien. Not to say that doing so will solve your problem. I had problems with my NS5XP (OS 4.0.0r3)and my Toshiba cable modem. However, when I swapped out the NS5XP with another running a lower version (3.0.0r1)i had better reesults all-around.
Although I do hear that 3.0.0r1 is very flakey.
