5Si Mopier Duplexer Problems Jams DC Controller

Well, this is an odd one... I think!

I have a customer who has two HP LJ 5Si Mopiers, lets call them "A" and "B." Both machines have duplex assemblies installed. The "B" machine started jamming heavily in the duplexer, 13.1 and 13.7 jams (but usually situated in the duplex or output roller area, despite the code).

The problem goes away completely for the entire week we had the duplexer out of the "B" machine. 1400+ pages, no jams on a unit which was seeing a jam every 365 pages on average. BTW, the average went down to one error in 410+ pages after the week without duplexing.

THEN, we stupidly replaced the duplexer as if that could be expected to solve the issue! Who would've thought?

Well, the new duplexer did not solve the issue. The original duplexer and the new duplexer were both later tested in the "A" machine (30 miles distant) and both work just fine in the "A" machine, while neither one works for even a single page in the "B" machine.

SO - this is a DC Controller / timing issue, right?

But if it is so, why is it so? Is this a drying electrolytic cap or something used on the DC Controller for the timing function?

If you've seen this before, post back and let me know. Maybe I'm just eating too many mushrooms or something.

I had a similar problem with an 8100. After talking with HP, it was determined the fuser was the culprit. Apparently, the fuser and the duplexer are using the same power lines, and fuser problems can cause false duplexer codes. Replacing the fuser fixed my problem.

That's an interesting theory, and I'll definitely bring my spare fuser to test it before I invest the time to install the DC Controller, but I did want to clarify that these were not false codes - the paper actually did stop at various points in the duplexer path (though I guess the false codes could shut down the print engine and leave pages inside the machine at random points. Was this similar to your experience?

Yes, I did have paper stopped at different locations in the printer. I know this sounds very strange, I thought so too, until I tried another fuser from the printer next to it. When the HP tech told me it was the fuser, I had to question him about being sure he understood my problem. I also tried a different duplexer without success before calling.
Not saying for sure that this is the problem with your machine, but it did fix mine.

Good luck.
