I live on a boat so connection to hotspots can be problematic (see previous post).

I'm looking for some kit like the gear, but I'm not sure if it is rated or if there is anything better to consider out there?

Any views?
 
The only way to do better with 2.4GHz would be to use a directional antenna, e.g. multi-element yagi, or parabolic dish. However, if you don't have true line-of-site to the hotspot antenna, it will either work very very sporadically or just not at all. Trees, buildings or the horizon in the way, and you can probably forget it I'm afraid...

Depending upon your area and terrain, you might check out the 3G option (similar frequency to mobile phones). This may be dreadfully slow in poor signal areas, but may be better than nothing.
