570 Firmware update through HMC 1

All,

taking my first steps into firmware upgrades with an HMC and have a few questions.

i'm trying to upgrade a 9117-570 to 01SF240-219 from 01SF225-96. if i go through all the steps according to the IBM documentation i see that the update is available from the IBM website depository, i can select the update i want, and instruct the HMC to download and upgrade. BUT i notice the install process seems to complete much faster than i expected, on the order of a second or so... and that if i go back thought the HMC to check the server's firmware level, i see that it has not changed.

The HMC is at the latest level, and it has been configured and tested for internet access... how else would it know what levels of FW are available for the 570?

i'm wondering if i have missed a step here.. also, i'm not sure i understand the difference between

Change Licensed Internal Code for the current release

and

Upgrade Licensed Internal Code to a new release

which of these does one select if the goal is the upgrade system firmware to the latest level?

01SF240-219 from 01SF225-96

the SF240 / SF225 is the release level so to go from 225 to 240 is a release change, use the "Upgrade Licensed Internal Code to a new release" option.

If you were going from SF240_201 to SF240_219, this would be a change within the current release so you would use "Change Licensed Internal Code for the current release

thanks for the clarification.

i was able to upgrade a group of 550's with the firmware without an issue, so i know the process works. the 570 is still a problem tho...

i was able to get the 570 upgraded by using the backup HMC. guess i have/had a config issue with the first one.

Update your HMC before you do anything.
