I want to connect to my MSN DellNet and my SBIC accounts at
the same time at the highest speed for each.
Here's the setup:
Dell Dimension 8200
1.8Ghz
512 ram
80G HD
CD-ROM
CDRW
3.5 floppy
10/100 NIC (for SBIC via ADSL)
56k Modem (for MSN dialup)
Win XP Home
I access MSN via 56k modem on the Dell Dimension 8200
using MSN Explorer. (The MSN account is a 6 month freebie
from Dell, and connects to DellNet by MSN.)
I also have an external ADSL modem I use with my SBIC
broadband account. That account uses Internet Explorer 6.
The ADSL modem is connected to a Linksys Router which I
also use on my home network. The Dell is NOT the host for
the home network, it is simply connected from its NIC to
the host and ADSL via the Linksys. I can access the ADSL
via any of the computers on my home LAN, but the MSN
account is only on the Dell.
NOTE: I am using 2 phone lines, one for each modem (i.e.,
(123) 555-1234 for ADSL and (321) 555-4321 for 56k)
Here's what I can currently do:
I can access both ISP's, MSN via MSN Explorer
and SBIC via Internet Explorer.
When opened SEPARATELY, the MSN via 56k modem connects
at a tolerable 53k. The SBIC via ADSL modem tests at
about 1140k down and 110k up (per tests on dslreports.com
and toast.net). Fine and dandy.
Problems:
If I connect to MSN (MSN Explorer via 56k modem) and
simutaneously connect to SBIC (Internet Explorer via ADSL)
I am hitting around 50k on each one. It doesn't matter
which I connect to first. I think this is because
MSN Explorer takes over the Internet Explorer on the Dell.
My big clues on this are:
1) I can still get the high connect numbers with other
computers on the LAN via the ADSL while connected to MSN
on the Dell
2) the icons in my System Tray change to reflect an MSN
connection
3) when I shut down MSN Explorer with Internet Explorer
still open, then try to access a website in Internet Explorer
(via Favorites or Address Bar), first I am informed that I
am offline, and upon reconnecting get thru at the
high speed.
Questions:
1) How do I make sure that MSN/MSN Explorer is
taking over Internet Explorer ? (- maybe something about
a ping test - please advise how to do . . .)
2) If MSN Explorer is indeed hogging over the
Internet Explorer, how do I make it stop?
3) Is it possible to resolve this by having 2 instances
of Internet Explorer loaded on the Dell? If so,
how do I get the second one loaded and point each
ISP to one and one only?
4) How can I use MSN under a regular IE GUI instead of
that clunky screen-cluttering browser for MSN Explorer?
I should state that I have discussed this with MSN tech
support and got responses ranging from the idiotic
"Why do you want to have two connections at the same
time anyway?" to the more intelligent "I don't know."
Thanks!!!
