I have connected two remote 5610 ip phones up to the same ip 500 unit both are at customers homes with vpn created between then and the ip500. They work correctly when dialing from and calling to other phones. When they call each other the phone rings but they cannot hear each other. Does the ip 500 system release the call to allow the two 5610 phone to continue the call. If so would I need to build a vpn between the two home locations?

thank You

It has to do with the routing.
You can turn off direct media path, it will work but it should be possible with direct media path turned on.

for efficient bandwidth usage yes, build vpn tunnel between the 2 homes, if you have capable routers, but otherwise, disable the DMP under extension settings as tlpeter says, this means the rtp path will go via the ipoffice.
