How do you view what is stored in flash. The show nvram block doesn't have the image file stored there. So how would I look at it? I'd like to be able to do this when I TFTP a new image onto the box, make sure the image is there before rebooting.

Once you tftp an image to the switch it reboots automatically, and as only one image is stored there is no need to view it.

If you want to view current software

# show system

With the later versions of software on the ES460/470, ERS4500, ERS5500 you can download the software without rebooting the switch.

address Specify IP address of TFTP server
diag Diagnostics image file name
image Software image
image-if-newer Software image if version newer
no-reset do not reset the switch after downloading
poe_module_image PoE image file name
<cr>

You could then reset the switch at your leisure to load the new software.
