Got a question about vlan routing. I know this can be done with Cisco, but I use Nortel. Anyway here is what I have, Large network with lots of 5520 switches. Got a few ITN’s (8010). Multiple vlans, everyone rides on Vlan 5 (DHCP 192.168.16.0/24) but I want management of switches and ITN’s on Vlan 30 (static 20.35.20.0/24). Setting up vlans I got, I have started the rollover to my management vlan. My question is, I don’t want to have a management computer on vlan 30 by itself. I want to enable inter vlan routing on one 5520 so that my work computer can tap both vlans. I want to be able to manage my switches on vlan 30 and run the “default” net on 5 from my computer with only me able to hit the vlan 30 and only using one NIC. Can this be done or am I stupid for wanting to do it this way? Thanks for any insight.

Your 5520 are capable of routing between vlans.

To enable # ip routing

You need to have at least one switch with an IP address on both vlans.

If you are not running a routing protocol then these IP addresses need to be the default gateway for your pc and network devices, this will allow them to talk across vlans.

You can configure a routing protocol on the switches, either RIP or OSPF. This would be the best method.

Once you have routing working the easiest way to prevent everyone accessing you network devices is to configure access policies which only allow access to the switches from certain IP addresses.
