Hi folks

I purchased a Nortel 5520 switch and configured it. I can see the switch in my optivity switch network and can commujnicate with it via telenet. I can bring the switch up as I do with all other swithes in my network. However the switch shows in large bold letters "UNIT DOWN" and the switch is basically unresponsive> I have viewed several options in but can not get the unit to respond or turn up> Any suggestions.

Are you seeing this when you connect to the switch using the Device Manager ? Then it is probably the version of your OSM software. I have had this too yesterday, we bought a new 5510 48P switch and i saw a UNIT DOWN and under it my switch .. as if it has been in a stack before where the other switch would have been removed or down. Anyhow, i downloaded an eval version of the new 5.x ESM (previous OSM) software. And when i used the device manager from that version he showed my switch just fine.

I hope it helps.

I have seen this with other platforms of the BayStack family.

In most cases it is what Rizzah noted. It probably was stacked with another unit, possibly to do a mass upgrade. But I normally have seen this where we stacked 8 switches to do the upgrade once. And we have only seen this when we did the upgrades. For some reason when they go to a stand alone, they think they are still associated to that stack. What you can do to remove that UNIT DOWN, telnet to the menu of the Baystack, select the option "Renumber Stack Units" or along those lines. Select the unit that you want to get rid of, and use the space bar to select your options. Basically you want to remove any ID associated with the ghost switch(es). Once that is done, and if you can reboot, you should be able to reboot, and the switch will no longer report the ghost stacked switch.

Sorry, re-read this, and I just realized that you were referring to your 5520 that showed Unit Down. You could access it, but not use the GUI interface. So my notes above were usless for you. My apologies. I was referring to units down with your switch.
