I have a single 5520-48T-PWR 5.1.16 software that as stopped responding to management, and cannot be pinged. The switch is up and running (the location and IP phones would be dead if it wasn't). Unfortunately, the switch is 150 miles away from me so I can't have someone put a console cable on it to check it out. I'm also afraid to have someone at the site reboot it in case there is a config corruption, etc. I recently upgraded this from 5.0.6 a few weeks ago.

One other idea is that the setting for the BOOTP options has changed to make the system look for a BOOTP server. I can't prove it but I swear that sometimes this option will change on these switches (I like have bootp never and use the configured IP address).

Just seeing if anyone else has had this occur on a 5500 series switch with 5.1 software?

We've seen this behavior on a number of Ethernet Switch 460/470 switches as well as some Ethernet Routing Switch 5500s. I will qualify my statement by saying we have generally only seen the problem on the ES460/ES470 running v3.6.x software and on the ERS5500 running v5.0.x software.

I would just go ahead and have someone cold boot the switch assuming you don't have a hardware problem.

If the switch is in a stack and the stack breaks the "In Band Stack IP address" will no longer be valid and the "In Band Switch IP address" will be valid.

I currently have ~ 64 ERS 5500 series switches/stacks in my environment with a mix of 5.0.x and 5.1.x software.

Good Luck!

I knew there was a published problem ES 450s with a certain version of 4.5.x code, but had not heard about this happining on the 5500 platforms. I too have quite a few 5520s - 36 currently, and 21 more on order to migrate out the remaining 450s, 460s and BPS switches in my network.

I searched the Nortel Knowledgebase and only found one item with some similarity, but it doesn't have a resolution yet.

It'll be a Monday or Tuesday next week before I am able to get a tech out to the site with a console cable. I'll report back if I find anything unusual.

I got a console cable onto the 5520. The serial management interface is working, but the unit is really sluggish when I try to display the log (show logging) it takes 5-10 seconds between showing each line of output. However, show sys-info does not appear to be affected, but performing a ping command also is sluggish, and the switch is still inaccessable via IP.

In the 5.x version of code I thought there was a command to display CPU usage, but I can't find it. After hours I am going to attempt a switch reset to see if it resolves the issue.

Performing a Reset at the main menu has resolved the issue, but all that did was fix the immediate issue rather than attempting to figure out the root cause of the problem. Other than saying "this happens sometimes,", they wanted to focus on the fact I only have 2 VLANs on the switch.

They" in the previous posting refers to Nortel tech support...

I'm happy to hear that a reset was able to resolve your problem.

Cheers!
