Hello Guys , some info on mixed 5500 stacks , I have 2 X 5510 & 2 X 5530 units in a stack the base unit (5510) sees an error to its down stream mate (5530) which sees the up LED not lit.
I have changed the cable to no avail , is it necessary to have the base unit as unit 1 ??
I have broke into boot up with control “C” and the stacking diags shows errors.
Is it necessary to have the 5530 as base ??
Cold boot or warm boot make no difference.

Any help much appreciated

You should always have the highest numbered 55xx as the base unit. Nortel do not support 5510 as base unit with 5530 as non-base.
I agree you should make the 5530 the base unit and try again.

You might check out
According to this, there was a particular batch of cascade cables that were bad (I think he had 7 of 10 defective of a certain vintage). This post also has info on how to do a loopback test to see if the cables are good. Also, you might first want to make sure you really do have the cables fully seated - I've found that you may think the connectors are on OK on 5500 stacks, but found that I didn't have them pushed on fully and tighted down (finger-tight).

Thanks curtismo , although when I telnet to a 5500 switch and command line, it doesnt understand the "stack loopback-test" command just gives a ?.

Also , if the base unit is the faulty unit , is it still possible to auto-config ? and what setting are necessarry to accomplish this.

One again thanks in anticipation .

What code version are you running on the switches, and are they the same?

Yes the firmware ver is 5.1.1.017 and all the same .
Thanks

You need an additional parameter for the command to complete. Here's an example of the command and output;

5520-48T-PWR#stack loopback-test internal
Testing uplink port ... Ok
Testing downlink port ... Ok
Internal loopback test PASSED

5520-48T-PWR#stack loopback-test external
External loopback test PASSED.

Cheers!

Hi Guys , thanks for the reply , am I missing something ?
when I type the command in I just get :

Northwards Rack8A#stack loopback-test internal
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
Northwards Rack8A#

This test was on a 5510 , I assume its the same ?

Big thanks guys

I get the same message on my stand-alone 5510s, perhaps your switch doesn't think its the member of a stack?

Hmmm... maybe the feature is not available in the 5510?

I know the hardware in the 5510 and 5520 differ substantially (according to Nortel). I'll test this myself on Friday and let everyone know.

What's the firmware version of the switch?

I know you said it was 5.1.1.017 software but are you running 5.0.0.4 firmware (boot/diag code)?

Cheers!

I didn't try the commands, but this command appears to exist on a 5510 that I have. What I did was typed "stack ?" and worked progressively down the list of options.

Hi Guys yes the diag ver was 5.0.0.4 and I did get it to work on the 5520 , it resulted in a faulty switch AND a faulty cable , I guess there may have been some kind of short circuit in the cable & this maybe took the stacking port out ??
Big thanks for all help
