Hi,

I have a 3300mxe running 8.0.5.12. The 5330s arent backlit. Ive proven the backlight is enabled when upgrading to rel 8.0.8.8. The firmwre versions the handset use are different. On upgrading the firmware on 8.0.8.8 the firms are backlit

The customer wants backlit phones but isint willling to upgrade.

My question is can i keep the controller on 8.0.5.12 but upgrade the firmware on the phones so they are backlit.

Is there anyway of telnetting into the 3300, replacing the ip phone firmware file, thus on rebooting the phones will upgrade, but the 3300 will remain on the same version.
Or pointing the phones to a different tftp server with the later firmware.

Has anyone done this or mentioned it to Mitel. Any consequences??? Im guessing its not supported or recommended but thought id ask the question.

Cheers

I'd say no you can't.

It was on the release notes of those phones that you needed a certain release.!

I would say you can but you need to put the files on the controller

The on;y difference is the backlite wich is a timeout to turn it of

I would give it a try if i where you

Regardless of what can or cannot be done, I'd stand my ground with the customer. Seasoned techs will tell you, never-ever do once that which you aren't prepared to do forever.

The customer wants his 5330s backlit? Fine, pony-up the money and they'll be backlit. It's a really simple process. Pay = reward. No pay = no reward.

had the official line from mitel uk.
They say it cant be done and to upgrade to rel 8 ur5, stating ur3 and ur 4 arent stable loads and rel 9 isint tested enough yet.

Must say i agree with tlpeter i think it could be done - cant see why not, would be interesting to try if anyone has a spare few hours.
Also agree with MitelInMyBlood, fair point.

Cheers for the replies guys...........shame i dont know if it would of ever worked or not!!!

Take it from me, when the customer doesnt not want to spend the money on the necessary equipment, it ends up being you (the tech) who eats it. here's why. You look everything over and you say...."this should work" the only problem is, when it doesnt...no one is going to be able to help you...plus you still have to make it work for the customer.

But if they buy items that match the vendors specs, no problems...but wait, if there is...call support.

Basically the point im trying to make is that the products costs a little more because someone has already spent the time up front to work out the kinks that you would have otherwise ran into. Its too hard to sell a product to a customer and tell them it may or may not work, but ill just charge you hourly until it does.

It's also an issue of support. If you're successful in beating the system, then don't complain when it (or something else) breaks as a result. Non-standard hacks are not supported & a violation of the software license.

I agree with MitelInMyBlood...Watch the Software License Agreements. Mitel does not support the backlit phones in the older software loads.
What is the issue with not wanting to upgrade the software. If the controller is in SA, then the upgrade is essentially free. Labor is their only cost.
You as the technician, should have access to Mitel OnLine, and therefore have access to downloading the latest software loads.
The most current version available is 9.0.0.41. Which to my knowledge does support the backlit 5330 phone.

If you are unsure of how to do an upgrade, I am sure that there are many people here that are willing to help you. I for one will do what I can.

It does, it works well
I agree with the upgrading path !!!
I agree with the support so you should upgrade
But i still think that only upgrade a phone is enough
But everybody is right, the customer should upgrade to avoid problems !!!

All good replies - ta!
yeah i can do the upgrade and all.
the customers just reluctant to upgrade. we took one of there sites upto ur3 and theyve had no end of problems, i think there basically scared of doing the same again incase of similar issues. this is despite me getting mitel direct to tell the cistomer rel 8 ur 5 is a very stable load.

if it was down to me all 5 sites would be taken upto ur5, but i cant do it without the customer paying and authorising me to!!!!

looks like they either allow me to upgrade or they stay with no backlights (and all the other bugs / issues they currently encounter!!!!)
cheers again for the replies

Hi, can anyone here send or point me where I can get the latest SIP firmware for the Mitel 5220 phones? I don't have Mitel online access and want to upgrade from version 6. Thanks.

Personally I think it's far too early to put 9.0.x on any customer site. In my experience there's too often little joy and lots of pain in being out there on the bleeding edge. On high visibility production sites we generally don't make a move to a entirely new stream (such as going from 8.x to 9.x) until the new stream has been out there in the field for 9 to 12 months. Being the guinea pig for the manufacturer to conduct wide beta trials in the retail channel is not fun, trust me.
