Hi to all! I have a 52*24*52 Cendyne CD-RW. However, it is hard to find 52X CD-R media. Does the drive compatible with ONLY 52X CD-R media, or can I go lower than that? Thanks for your time and efforts in advance! Any direction is greatly appreciated!

grez: Since the burner won't hit near 52x anyway, a lower number(40x,48x)is sufficient.

Thanks! Will do! If you get a chance to explain that (why it won't hit 52X), that would be great. Thanks again!

grez,
First of all, 52X is the max speed of your burner. It is nowhere near the average speed of how your burner will actually perform. It gets a bit technical, but there are reasons.

As the CD spins in the drive, the laser burns from inner to outer edges. Inner points on the physical CD itself move slower than outer points. 52X might be the max speed obtained on the very outer rings of the CD. In contrast, the burner might not be able to write faster than 10-12x on the inner rings. If you use the latest version of Roxio Easy CD Creator Platinum 5.2x, it shows you the burn speed in real time. On a 24x burner I've used, the inner edge starts at 8x slowly moving to 24x towards the end, maybe averaging 14-15x overall.

All CD-R Media used to read 1-4x or 1-8x back in the early days of burners. However, the naming convention has shifted to just printing the max speed instead of the range. Any high speed CD you have can burn at lower speeds (i.e. 40x CD would have no problems burning at 16x).

I recently got a LiteON 40x12x48, had some old el cheapo 12x disks left over from previous burner and have had no problems at all using them, they burn just as fast as the new media, usually indicating 40x which is born out by the time required to fill a CD. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Hi Mulga!

Thanks for the info. I just purchased 48X CD-R media. If there are no other threads (which I'm sure there won't be with the great direction I've been given by you guys), then consider that all went well. Thanks!!
