515 and VPN Client 1.1 - Can I upgrade to latest IOS?

I'd like to upgrade the IOS to take advantage of the web based management tools available. My questions are these:

1 - Can we upgrade from 4.x -> 6.1 and not cause problems with the currently installed VPN client for the various remote users we have.

2 - Why when we make ANY type of small change to the PIX configuration does the VPN client stop working for all the remote machines? Has anyone seen this before or am I missing something simple?
