500GB thinks it is 320GB

Basically, as the title says. I have a 500GB hard drive, I mirrored a 320GB hard drive onto it using Data Rescue 3 (mac). Now I seem to have a 500GB hard drive with no files on it and it thinks it is only 320GB.

I have tried formatting but after that I have no clue what to try next.

Please advise.

Thanks for your time.

Sounds to me like the mirror didn't work and you now have a 320GB partition on it and the rest is unpartitioned space. You need to delete that partition and create a new one to recover the full use of the drive.

I could maybe have made a better suggestion with more to go on.

I tend to agree with stduc on both counts. Also what O.S are you seeing this on?
As that would helps us target our answers better.

No use in giving you Linux tool options if you are on Windows.

Have you tried using a partition manager to see what else is on the drive?

If on Windows most of them have a built in Disk Manager that could help you out.

Alternatively booting with as Ultimate Boot CD would also give you access to several other tools.

Gents, he is on a MAC...

with that, download a copy of DBAN, burn it to CD or DVD, then boot your MAC with it and NUKE that drive... this will take quite some time...

you may be able to just do the first 10%, as all partitioning info are contained on the first track...

also which version of MacOS are you running? you may instead take a look at SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner[/link)...

or go down the Linux road, in that you use [url=http://clonezilla.org/]CloneZilla

Are you sure that this isn't the situation?

He basically added the 500GB drive to an existing 320GB RAID1 array.

So what SHOULD have happened is that you used 320GB of the 500GB drive in the RAID1, leaving 180 (or whatever the remaining diff really is) unassigned. So to get use of it (and still use your RAID 1 of 320GB, just go to "disk management" or whatever is the term on a Mac, and create a partition in the unpartitioned space of teh 500GB drive. That'll give you full use of the drive, while still allowing you to do the RAID1.

Aha, I missed the "(mac)" being pointed out.
In any case the judgement still stays. The drive was imaged from a 320GB drive. so the remaining space is likely unpartitioned space.

I believe the Disk Utility offers a way to see how the drive is partitioned. In Which case you can delete all partitions and recreate one that is the full size of the drive.

Stuff like this is why it's preferable to use the same size drives from the same manufacturer when setting up a raid array.

Again, Gents, OP has never mentioned RAID 1 (mirror, as mentioned by stduc, means CLONE)...

and he CANNOT access the drive at all, the geometry has gotten all screwed through the imaging...

;-)

waiting reply from OP...

He never mentioned he couldn't access it at all. Only that it had no files and he has no idea what to try next.

As a first step on OSx, the Disk Utility should let you see the entirety of the drive whether partitioned or not. From there deleting the existing partition, and creation of a new full sized one should be a matter of using the Volume Scheme drop down.

He says he "mirrored" it. I realize he may mean cloned, but the terminology given is mirror which equals a RAID 1. Of course, if he's asking the question, he may not realize the correct terminology either.

Hmm, we may never know what the truth was. starkhund logged in 3 times to date, posted one question, and last time logged in was this past Saturday. It'd be interesting to know for sure what he meant with his question.

So, if you do check back in, starkhund, post back and let us know - did you really "clone" or "mirror", and have you tried anything to resolve your issues?

'Course, I suppose if it were his one machine, and he used DBAN, well he may have a little difficulty logging in again - getting to the Internet, remembering the site's name, and then logging in.

So we shall see. [smarty]

Kjv1611,

I humbly bow, and accept the correction, as you mentioned he may have gotten the terminology messed up...
but I on the other hand missed his statement about mirroring the 320gb onto the 500gb, or just read it as CLONED and did not realize he wrote mirror...
I did catch it, though, in stduc's post...

hmmm... Lasik here I come...

and yes, lets await the OP's response...

That sounds too much like the way I do things. I "interpret" more than I actually read or listen. Have to constantly battle myself. My wife will readily remind me at times. [blush]
