500 vs L500 question

Could anybody tell what is the difference between types "L500" and "500"?!?

And where should I look for the reason of PBX reaction:
- when I'm setting new phone of type "500" - PBX is switching it aoutomaticaly into profile "L500"! ???

that is a function of secession software and their is no difference in the software that i can see. just another change that nortel found necessary on the new software, i have been told they needed all station types to be four digits for the coding, haven't seen anything in print
