500 error

Using the GD library to open images and combine two into a calendar like picture I've run into a snag. I believe it happens because the image is too large and is erroring the script. I tried using if (!$img) to get around it but no luck. Does anyone know a better way of error checking for out of bounds memory requests?

There are setting in the php.ini file which limit the amount of resources that a script may use. Look at memory_get_usage or memory_limit
