We have a large warehouses with 50 Cisco AP1220 access points running in autonomous mode. Roaming is sometimes an issue. Does anyone else run this many access points without a central controller?

I don't even know if a central controller would help speed up the roaming.

Thank you

A controller would significantly improve roaming primarily because the controller will make the APs work together to determine channel and transmit power. That should improve your coverage and reduce co-channel interferance. Also, devices that don't cleanly roam from on AP to another will lose connectivity momentarily while they do a new DHCP discovery.

It will also make your life easier. You can manage all the APs as a single entity than as separate devices.

If you do get a controller, I suggest this book. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1587058146/ref=oss_product

Another very common problem that causes wireless connectivity loss is improper antenna orientation. If you don't orient the antennae in the recommended manner, you lose the benefits of antenna diversity.
