Hello, all

We have a windows 2000 server with exchange 5.5 on it. All the users in the company use outlook. Its setup as a pop3 in outlook to check mail.(i thought during outlook setup your supposed to choose exchange server??? and not pop3, confused).

Now how do i go about backing up the exchange server? I dont think any emails are being saved on the server. So can i just backup the Information store and Directory with NTbackup? NTbackup seems to be aware that exchange is there, and i see the options for me to the IS and directory.

Any info would be great because this is my first time working with exchange.

Thanks
Laura

Why bother backing it up, there's nothing on it? :)

The NT Backup will work smashing for your purpose.

If you've got a couple of old PC's (2) start practice restoring your exchange, thats the best way to learn about exchange essentials. Build a NT Backup domain controler in you live environment once its got all the user accounts etc. take it offline, move it onto a practice switch (not connected to the live environment), then promote it to a PDC, then start practicing the restore. Check out the FAQ's in this forum.

Good luck,

Iain

Exchange is designed to be oh so much more than just a POP3 server - in fact if you only want a POP3 server there are less complicated, simpler and cheaper solutions. I agree with Spirit, there's no point (regulalry) backing up Exchange if there's no mail stored on it.

Exchange comes into its own when used as a collaborative messaging environment, with all the email stored in the transaction logged database. Have a look at the DR whitepaper mentioned in faq10-6004 to properly understand the power of this.

If you want to be able to back up your corporate mail, reconfigure all of your clients to connect to Exchange server, not via pop3. Then you'll be able to back up the databases. Otherwise, if someone has a hard drive crash, their mail is gone forever!

When all else fails, READ THE DAMN BOOK!
