This is strange. If I attempt to boot to system maintenance (hit enter at boot, then attempt to enter the root password to enter system maintenance mode) the keyboard doesn't work. Control D doesn't either. I have to press reset. Booting with timeout works fine.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what's happening with this?

Probably would have you copy boot off your EBD to see if it helps. Ed Fair

The only pertinent difference I can see is that MAPKEY is NO on the EBD and is YES on the HD. I'll try it tonight when I replace a tape drive.

Thanks, but the problem I'm having isn't intermittent. The console keyboard works fine, as long as I let it age past the autoboot timeout and boot up automatically. If I attempt to do any keyboard entry before the autoboot timeout the keyboard goes dead (after the inital return at the boot prompt). :(
