I'm installing 5.0.5 on a pentium, finished the install, put the patches in, (SW manager, 5.0.5a, 497c, 600a, and 642), the multiport card software, then attempted to add the HD on a second adaptec controller via scoadmin and the hardware manager. At completion of the first pass there were no devices added to point to the hardware, therefore the 2nd pass failed.

Curious if anybody else has seen the problem. Adding the drive before the patches has been working on other boxes I've built.

To which adapter is the boot drive attached? You said "second adaptec", so I'm just curious. Many of the adaptec's are dual controllers, so the first "stand-up" card might need to be configured as Adapter 2 (counting from 0). Also, which Adaptec and which driver (arad, alad, ad160,???).

When you run:
# hwconfig -h
How many adapters are listed (before and after you did the mkdev hd routine).
When you run:
# hw -r pci
What is reported for the Adaptec?
I haven't seen any problems with adding drives AFTER installing those mandatory patches for 5.0.5, but it's been a few years since I installed 5.0.5 from scratch.

You said the first pass of "mkdev hd" didn't create any new driver files. I think some of those are only created on the second pass. Can you see the new entry by running:
# mkdev .scsi
I still use that utility to view what has been configured into the kernel. I NEVER use it to modify, however.

Boot on scsi 0, id 0, additional on scsi 1, id 0. But the next load crashed before the patches, so it appears I have something else to look at, and the cry for help was premature.

Well, once again faced with a short between the keyboard and floor.

Can't add a drive on controller 1 ID0 if there is a jumper on the address one block of the drive.

What an idiot.
