In the next week or so i plan on purchasing a new video card. the video card supports up to 8x agp. however my motherboard only supports 4x agp. will i experience a huge performance loss b/c of this? thanks for the replies.

Nothing that you'll notice. If you went from 8x inthe first place then you might see it but for the most part, it really isn't going to matter until the next gen gamees come out. Waht card are you installing?

i am going from a geforce 2TI to a ati 9800 pro. I can't wait!

That's a sweet board and it will do well. Do yourself a favor and after you do the install, go to DriverHeaven.net and search for Omega. He optimizes the ATI drivers so they tend to work better than the ones supplied.

Here's a recent thread you can take a look at that addressed this question:

If other hardware ie: CPU and motherboard chipset, are older types: maybe a Athlon 1.2 and a KT266 chipset motherboard, then the 4x AGP is the least restrictive (bottleneck) and the one you should worry least about.
The 9800Pro will go like the wind compared to the GF2 Ti but will likely be running anything upto 50% less than it's potential due to other system bottlenecks.
It all depends on how modern the platform is.

thanks for all the replies! I just received my new video card yesterday and i am now the proud owner of the HIS 9800 pro IceQ! check out my other 2 posts to see about the little quirks i am having with it. other than those, this card rocks!

Little quirks!! lol, well unfortunately from my experience and many of my customers, if you want to own a high end ATI card ie: 9700PRO, 9800PRO, 9800XT then you just have to learn to live with these "little quirks" as you put it because thats just how they are.
These little quirks can vary from the slightly annoying to the down right pain in the ass, you are lucky if you fall into the former category.
Roll on NV40.

All the little quirks are solved!!! yeeaaaahhhhh! I just enabled some features in my bios (fast write agp, agp sync and changed my agp aperature size) booted in to safe mode and ran a little program "driver remover" to get rid of any nvidia crap drivers that were left behind. good job nvidia for that great uninstall script that didn't remove all the traces of their drivers. now the HIS 9800 pro IceQ is running sweet!

Nice to hear!!
