I've now tried 4 times trying to get RS running on a named instance of sql 2005 standard on Win 2003 server.

I removed RS.
Installed RS (using a service account setup on domain).
Applied SP 2
Opened the configuration tool, setup directories (which were created).
Created database using windows credentials (logged into server as domain admin).
Database was created. Clicked apply and now have "connection settings have not been saved. Your RS may not operate properly."

This is a brand new installation, new database. I haven't set it up one way, then came back and modified services accounts etc. Why is it not saving these settings? I am on day 5 of trying to get a simple RS setup so our CRM software will work.

There should be a link you can click to get more info. What's it say?

I just went back into the configuration tool and magically the initialization is now showing a greyed out checkmark. I then tried to access reports but I am confused as to what URL to use. There seems to be many different ways of accessing. I tried but I just a get a page cannot be displayed. I tried but get a windows login window (I'm logged in as domain admin on the server).

There is only 1 installation of reporting services, which is on the named instance of sql 2005 (there is a default install of sql 2000 without reporting services). The default website has been used.

When I tried to browse the reports within IIS, I get an error "A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing

I tried that as well, but just get cannot display the website. If I installed reporting services on a sql 2005 instance, do I have to reference that in the URL? I read other Microsoft papers that says it uses port 80?

Here is how our SSRS is set up. We have a production and development system setup. One is called "SQLProd" and the other is "SQLDev." To access SQLProd, I use the following:

However, I am thinking that you are on your local machine, so I would think localhost would work. You could try calling it by its instance name.

I think the default port is set to 8080. I found this on the web..."By default, the port number for a Web server is 80. Experimental services may sometimes be run at port 8080." Try them both. It shouldn't hurt anything.

Ok. Go into Administrative Tools -> IIS -> right click "Report Server" and look at what the TCP port is. That's the # you want. I don't have a local version of 2005 installed, but I have one of 2008. However, 2008 no longer uses IIS for the browser interface so I don't think I can help you. Sorry!

There is no specified TCP port as it's been installed and setup under the default website of IIS (which I assume is port 80). I copied and pasted the exact link from about and changed the server name to ours and tried from my Vista machine and get "page cannot be displayed."

I tried the link and replaced with localhost and tried that directly on the server and got "page cannot be displayed."

If I try and browse the Reports website from within ISS on the server and get an error:

"A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing resource ' Line 1, Position 2"

If I browse from within IIS to the Reports and click on pages and try and browse the Folders.aspx I get this error:

"A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing resource ' Line..."

For some reason the Reports website did not have framework 2.0.50727 selected so I did and restarted services. Now I am beyond the first error and am now onto another. "
Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1). error CS2001: Source file 'C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\fjetpwg9.0.cs' could not be found error CS2008: No inputs specified"

Everything I can find so far is about permissions so I've added full control to the C:\Windows\Temp to network, asp, service account and still cannot access the site. Error is the same from both my workstation and the server.

Added local Network Service account full control of Windows Temp and can now browse. Wish they just added this during the configuration of Reporting Services! Thanks for all your suggestions.

No problem. Glad you got it working. I had completely forgot to ask you about .net framework.
