Hopefully this has been asked enough that someone has an answer, but I'm still having problems.

I have a 250GB Maxtor drive in a Windows XP (SP2) machine. Yep, just 137 GB shows up in 'My Computer', but in 'Computer Management/Disk Management' the entire size shows up. No, not the entire 250GB, but pretty close.

It seems to me that the missing space should be useable since Disk Management reports it as being there, and when I tried Partition Magic 8, it gets an error when I try to create a new partition with the free space.

Any ideas? Thanks.

BIOS must see the entire drive too for full 48-bit LBA support. It it does then you should be good to go...try creating a partition via Disk Management.

has plenty of info.

Your 250GB should be showing around 232.GiB

The BIOS doesn't have the option to show me the size, but XP does see the total size. You are correct, it shows as 232 GB, but the amount of usable space is nowhere near that.

Disk Management does not give me the option to create a partition.

Well Freestone, I took a shot in the dark and it worked. All I did was run CHKDSK \F, and it took care of everything. I got my freespace back. Thanks for the tips, though.

Thanks for reporting your success, ts. I'll keep that chkdsk /f fix tucked away.
