Is there a device or a way to juice up the speaker volume on a 4424 set? He is an older gentleman and likes to use his speakerphone, but it is too low for him to hear.
He used to have an older system and he had a Frankenstein phone on his desk to accomplish this.

You should be able to buy a handset with a built-in volume control - that would boost the signal. Try Refurn Supplies.

Doesn't like using the handset. Has a problem with his arms that is why he uses the speakerphone.
Would I be able to go into the phone and maybe attach an exterior device to the speaker?

I've never cracked open a 4424D+ before as I shy away from any sort of internal modifications to telephone equipment.

The real kicker is that opening the unit might result in a voided warranty (assuming that the unit is covered by one).

There are spare analog ports, but the man is notoriously cheap(won't purchase another phone) and is complaining that his old phone system didn't have this problem. The story of our lives.....

I guess you could crack the phone open - disconnect the internal speaker - and run the two speaker wires outside the phone and connect them to an external (amplified) speaker - but it would void the warranty - and may damage the phone circuit board - so you would be taking a risk.

Would the customer be willing to try out a headset?

Tripoth, I had the same problem!

I had a 4424LD on My desk in My Home Office( now have IP office ), I always had to have the volume all the way up on the speakerphone. I only had two other installs that had 4424LDs, and guess what, same thing, the speaker phone was not as loud as the 4400, 4412D, 4424D, and 4406D! Lucky for Me no complants from customer! That Big Flouresent Display was always a hit!

THE 4424D, 4412D, 4406D, and 4424LD use the same speaker!
It is a 45 Ohm speaker, 4624IP ( gen I ) uses the same speaker too! The 4400, 4400D might have the same speaker, not sure though, I never took a 4400 apart.
So I will assume it is the amp on the 4424LD board itself.
I would not use a regular 8 ohm speaker( Avaya gen II IP phones ),nor tap into the phone, that will probably fry the amp on the board, or worse the whole board!

I ran into the same problem at a law firm in Los Angeles. One of the firm's founders is partially deaf and needed a loud external speaker (he too did not want an amplified handset).

I did what Tom suggested. I cracked open the 4424D+ and wired the speaker contact directly to one of these:
That unit comes with a small grey loudspeaker horn. I kept that for myself and instead used a small, 25W desktop speaker with cloth-covered ABS grill (far more handsome than the horn) from Radio Shack.

The Viking M2W paging amp has a tiny little potentiometer to control the volume. Once connected, set the 4400 set to top volume, then adjust the Viking.

I know it sounds crazy to use this device, but I assure you that it worked like an absolute champ. The whole thing is a little smaller than a deck of cards. I simply mounted the amplifier on the back side of the speaker.

Thanks for the tip. I will try it out and let you know how it goes.
