Hi All,

This is probably a really easy one for someone but not me! :-(

I have a networked HP laserjet 4250n which has 4 trays... I need to limit tray 4 so that only one user can print to it.

I have been pointed in the way of Jet Admin, but not seeing anything in there for tray permissions.

Thanks in advance

Maybe not in permissions, but can you simply not setup that tray in the driver on the pc's that you don't want to use it?
IE, you don't want me to use that tray so on my pc you only indicate that there are 3 trays in the driver setup. If my driver doesn't know about tray 4, I shouldn't be able to select it.

Thanks LawnBoy...

I really need it to be done by permissions really, because I deal with this client remotely alot, and want to be able to administer this from one central location...

Thanks anyway!

I have a solution that may be a bit unorthodox but it should work. Hehe famous last words, "It should work". On the print server set the tray in question to uninstalled. On the user that needs that tray, map the printer via an LPR port, (you will need the IP address of the printer and you will need to be logged in with admin rights as it will need to load the print driver locally)and then ensure the tray in question is available. You may need to adjust permissions on the local spool folder for the user in question as well. The LPR mapping basically bypasses the print server. Hope that helps.

unfortunately time has got the better of me and I used LawnBoy's suggestion...

Thanks for all the advise though guys!

You're not the first one to make that mistake.

<rofl> I needed a good chuckle first thing Monday morning. Thanks for that one. :)

arrgghhh!!!!

Back at the site now and they are saying that as much as the person only has the option to print to the first 2 trays, if they are empty, the printer is deciding to print from the next tray.

I need to disable this from happening, anyone know a way to stop the printer moving on to the next tray?

In the printer, change the paper type in the tray you want to keep people from. Most drivers use 'autoselect' so it rolls through all trays marked 'plain'. We changed our tray3 on our 5si's to be 'recycled' so that it stops when tray2 is empty

I found out that a setting called auto continue was on... so turned that off, then set the limited printer to specifically print to tray 2... now it will ask them to load tray 3, which is not the best of situations, but at least they get a warning before it goes to tray 3.

Thanks anyway jgideon
