We have a HP 4200N. It will only print if we enter the paper in manually. It will not print from the printer tray. We have had tech. support come out several times to repair it and they say they do not know what is wrong with it.

Try a cold reset. There is a setting that isn't correct. I have had 4000, 4050, & 4100 do this exact same thing, and even though the menu reads like it should to feed from the cassette drawer, it only wants to feed manual. We did a cold reset, and it resolves this. I would start there. To do a cold reset on the 4200 follow the below instructions:

1. Turn the printer off
2. Press and hold the "select" button (Green Checkmark button) until all three lights flash, then stay on.
3. When you see "Sellect Language" Press the Up or Down arrows until you see "Cold Reset"
4. Press the Select button.

If you perform the cold reset with the jetdirect in the printer (network card) you will need to reset the settings. You can take the card out prior to performing the cold reset to avoid having to reset the settings.

FYI, I tried your fix yesterday and the green button would not power on the printer. I could turn it on and off with the power switch. Do you have have to hold the button down for a long time? I will have more time to play with it today.

Turn printer off..

Hold down the select button, and then turn the printer power on. Continue holding down the select button until all three printer control-panel lights flash once and then remain on. This might take up to 10 seconds.

Also, check your paper size. Both on the printer, and in your software.

If you have selected letter size, for example, in your softare, and the printer thinks that A4 is loaded into the tray, it won't automatically print from that tray.

Make sure that your printer, AND your software, know what size printer is loaded into each tray.

This is the #1 cause for issues like this. Even tho the printer has letter loaded into it, for example, it has been told that it's a different size, OR letterhead, etc.
