If a new formatter has been installed, the firmwware version is newer than that available on HP.
Roll back to the earlier version will take care of this.

Interesting, would you mind telling me what version that is shipped with these formatters ?
The latest I found available on the WEB is 04.020.3
dated 28 Jun 2005

Sorry wiz, it was a 4250 ver. 9.007.2
I rolled back to 8.013.4 and all was well.

Ahh... Now I understand. Cause there hasn't been any FW update for the LJ 4200 for quite a while.
Regarding the latest FW however I am not sure whether there is actually something wrong with it or not, but I can tell that the latest released uni-drivers for the LaserJet 4250/4350 series (PCL 5/6) have led to spooler crashes, slow printing etc. So it could be a bad driver also generating these issues. I have recommended quite a few driver rollbacks lately from here and so far they have solved those issues seen. These issues were seen on printers with both the latest FW and the latest driver used.
